The idea is to promote the role of science in the social and economic development of the country, create favorable conditions for preservation and further development of the national research capacity and enhance visibility of Belarus as the country with a high level of intellectual and human capital.

The decision on undertaking the Year of Science has been approved by the special President’s decree and was followed up with an action plan adoption by the Government on February 14, 2017. The action plan includes nearly 70 events aimed at improving the legal support for research activities, media coverage of Belarusian scientific achievements, academic and research events, etc. Special attention is given to discovering and supporting the talented young scientists, as well as to improving their skills in innovation management.

The major focus will be on innovation and international cooperation. The latter includes, in particular, organization of the CEI Ministerial Conference in Research and Technology focused on Biotechnology and Pharmacy as part of the Belarus Presidency in CEI  (October 2017), conducting the Day of Belarusian Science in Moscow (June 2017), as well as ensuring the activities of HORIZON2020 national contact points.

The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has been authorized to coordinate the implementation of the nationwide action plan.

Another good news that is not directly connected to the Year of Science but that will positively influence its implementation and overall international cooperation in STI is introduction from February 12, 2017 of a visa-free regime for citizens of 80 states, including the EU members, for up to 5-days visits to Belarus. “Our motives are quite clear: to boost the country's tourism appeal and make it more attractive for business,” - the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik said.
